As we know, Military data security and data protection is very key for military data systems and solutions in military operations.Then how to destroy and securely erase a Military SSD even FBI/NScannot recover your data?
To completely erase data to not be recovered by the FBI or any advanced tool, you need do more than simple deletion or formatting. Below is a detailed method based on professional SSD manufacturer expert :
First let us see how Data Recovery Works
- When you delete a file in the computer as normal, only the pointer to the file is removed from the directory or file table, but user data remains on the Military SSD disk until it is overwritten by new data. The FBI or forensic expert can recover this data easily;
- Reformatting the SSD also leaves data intact;
- Even a single overwrite pass may not be enough against very advanced forensic recovery, Need to overwrite all user data in allocated blocks, file tables, and data in reallocated defective blocks
Recommended Methods for Complete Data Erasure
Fast Secure Erase is designed for emergency data erase in a few seconds.
1). Software-Based Secure Erase- Sending ATA Command

- Use data sanitization software that overwrites the entire drive multiple times with patterns of 0s, 1s, and random data. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends multiple passes for highly sensitive data;
- For SSDs, The Secure Erase function can also be trigger by Host ATA Command directly..All the data of the ssd will be erased totally through sending a command by users.
2) 2 PIN short trigger or by a User Trigger Device

Pin 14– Security Erase Trigger Input (Normally connected to GND directly, for initialize the erasing process)
Pin 13 – Security Erase Indication Output(Normally connected to the LED indicator, for monitoring the erasing process)
Normally we can define Pin 14 or Pin 13 as Security Erase Trigger Input(Normally connected to GND directly, for activating the erasing process)
- Connect the Military SSD 2.5″ SATA SSD I6 Series with power supply; the SSD works as normal and the LED indicator is OFF.
- When the P13 or P14 is connected to a low voltage pulse /or the GND, the LED indicator keeps ON; if the pin 14 is continuously connected to a low voltage pulse/or the GND for 3 seconds above, the secure erase will be triggered/activated. Once the erase is triggered, the LED indicator keeps twinkling until the erase process completed(it will take around 15 seconds to 20 seconds to erase all data ); After the secure erase is completed, the LED indicator keeps ON;
- Once any sudden power interruption during erasing process, it will reactivate the erase procedure until all the data will be erased totally;
- Reboot the SSD and the user data in SSD is already totally erased and overwritten.
Note:
- P13 or P14 is the only key to trigger secure erase process;
- It need take at least 3 seconds to trigger the secure erase and take 15 to 20 seconds to erase all the data in the SSD.
- Although the data stored on the Flash memory and all data in the SSD is erased, the SSD can be used again after initialization;
3) Hardware-Based Secure Erase -Physical Destruction
For absolute certainty, physically destroy the military-grade ssd drive is the best. Physical destruction is the only way to guarantee no recovery, especially against nation-state level forensic capabilities.
For SSD, A momentary higher voltage is produced by the onboard circuit to destroy the flash storage medium .The SSD can’t be used again if the hardware is destroyed;

Note:
1:The higher voltage is required +28V while the Power Consumption is no less than 200W.
2:The SSD will become burned hot with smoke during the physical destruction period, please be careful and don’t touch it.
Summary
For most users, multiple times overwrites or the Secure Erase ATA command on SSDs is sufficient to prevent recovery.
If you need to be 100% sure (e.g., evading forensic recovery by FBI or similar agencies), you’d better combine software-based Secure Erase with physical destruction of the Military SSD.This approach ensures that your data is effectively irrecoverable by the FBI or any other forensic entity.
Besides,These Military-Grade SSD drives feature advanced quick secure erase and Self-destruction triggered capability to protect sensitive information from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
